Welcome to International Programs

From Our Director

It is with great pride and pleasure that I invite you to review our Summer 2008 – Spring 2009 brochure. Within these pages you will find that a world of opportunities is available to you through our FSU International Programs.

FSU has over 50 years of experience in providing students with extraordinary study abroad opportunities. Through our challenging academic programs, students can study in more than 20 global locations in Europe, Asia, South America, and Oceania. Our extensive course offerings allow students to satisfy graduation requirements while living within diverse cultures the world over. Whether for a short term in the summer, a full semester, an academic year, or a complete college career, FSU International Programs is your avenue to exemplary study abroad.

President Wetherell joins me in welcoming you to FSU International Programs, and we challenge you to broaden your horizons by becoming one of the 1800 students who will attend one of our international campuses. By doing so, you will have an educational experience that will continue to have positive effects throughout your lifetime.

Mission Statement

The Florida State University International Programs is committed to providing a quality international learning environment where students are challenged to be learners, leaders, achievers and contributors within a global community. In the twenty-first century students must be able to understand and perceive global change, and we are dedicated to exposing them to international cultures, lifestyles and languages.

About Safety

As students consider studying abroad during these days of uncertainty, let me assure you, parents and students alike, that our highest priority is the welfare and security of our students. For over fifty years, The Florida State University's International Programs has been committed to providing an extensive academic and cultural experience that enriches the lives of our students. It has always been our policy to put the students' safety first and never, under any circumstances, conduct a program if we are advised of imminent danger by the proper authorities.

In both times of peace and trial, our directors and administrators maintain constant contact with our Tallahassee office as well as United States officials, both at home and abroad. Our year-round programs are administered by permanent resident staff that are sensitive to the unique needs of American students. As the world has faced many challenges in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, the Persian Gulf region, and other areas, our programs have been able to continue with careful supervision despite any adverse circumstances. We have contingency plans and funds in place should it ever become necessary to evacuate our students.

Since September 11, our overseas study centers have implemented the appropriate elements of our emergency contingency plans. These elements have included regular meetings of students and staff in which the safety procedures and precautions are detailed and re-emphasized.

Should students choose to travel, they are particularly reminded: to inform center directors of the details of their itineraries; to heed US State Department announcements and travel advisories; and to take relevant US Embassy/Consulate contact information with them. Our directors overseas are in touch with the local U.S. Embassies and Consulates, and are following their advice. All participants on overseas programs—students, faculty and staff—are advised to continue to monitor and follow all US State Department announcements and travel advisories.

Again, let me assure you that as the current situation unfolds, the best interest of our students is of the highest priority to all faculty and staff at International Programs, both in Tallahassee and abroad. Every effort will be made to facilitate a secure and rewarding learning environment. Students venture abroad to witness the progress of time, experience other cultures, and appreciate their role as American citizens in the world. FSU International Programs is fully committed to helping students realize these aspirations now, as well as in the future.
