This four-week program will take advantage of the wealth of culture and
arts plus the surreal beauty of the Emerald Isle’s Atlantic Coast. While
on the program, students will be instructed in the use of digital photography
which will include a survey of contemporary visual arts in Ireland.
For the first half of the program, the group will be staying in the city of Galway, seat of Connacht province during the Galway International Arts Festival. The time in Galway will serve as an introduction to Irish culture and the contemporary European art scene. This will also be a great opportunity for urban photography. Galway is situated on River Corrib, which connects Laugh Corrib to the Galway Bay. In addition to its lively bilingual culture and wealth of historic resources, it is considered the safest city in Ireland. The group will stay in Corrib Village, the student apartment accommodations of the National University of Ireland, Galway.
During the second half of the program, students will settle in Newton Castle, the location of Burren College of Art. This location is chosen for its unique landscape and historical significance. The Burren, also known as ‘The Stony Place,’ is one of the largest Karst regions in Europe containing more than 90 megalithic tombs, dolmens, and ring forts, most dating back to the Iron Age. Students will have the opportunity to take a number of field trips to practice their new photographic skills and create a fine arts portfolio.
Guest lecturers and faculty from NUI Galway and Burren College of Art will expand on the rich experience of this unique program. The program also includes a scenic cruise of the river and Loch Corrib, a ferry trip to an over-night stay and tour of Aran Islands at the mouth of Galway Bay.
